Leapfrog to success
Incisive Media offers an Editorial Training Programme which gives you the opportunity to get into journalism. If you are a graduate looking to start an editorial career or if you are currently in work and are looking for a career change, this scheme is for you.
Starting in September each year, Incisive recruits editorial trainees to write on real publications in real journalism jobs. From day one, we expect our trainees to write for our award winning and market leading titles, both in print and online. We provide excellent development opportunities to extend your skills in areas including interviewing, media law, news writing and writing for the web. Through both structured class-room based courses and on-the-job training, we will give you the launch pad to start your editorial career.
Previous editorial trainees have progressed extremely well, some to editorships, some to our offices in New York and Hong Kong. All working on key brands, immersing themselves in their markets, all still excited to see their name against an article. Read on to see where your career with Incisive Media could take you:
Andrew Tjaardstra joined Incisive Media through this scheme in 2004 and is now the editor of Professional Broking, a monthly magazine. He gives a flavour of what he has encountered in his time with Incisive: “In my first two years with Incisive Media, I was on assignment to Geneva, Zürich, Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam and Frankfurt, met decision-makers at some of the biggest names in finance, drank champagne at the Royal Society of Arts and clinked glasses in the riverside Members’ Bar at Parliament”.
Sophia Morrell is another trainee who has now taken over her own title as Editor ICFA: “The scheme is a fantastic opportunity in a notoriously tough to break industry. My role on Structured Products saw me working as a fully fledged reporter from day one, and has taken me all over the world and led to some amazing experiences, including Colorado, New York, Toronto, Paris, Miami…the list continues! On the day the scheme finished, I was promoted to Assistant Editor Online of the magazine, which I never thought I would have achieved within 12 months.”
Peter Madigan’s career has taken him to New York: “I joined Incisive Media through the graduate programme in September 2004. My first role was as a reporter for Cover Magazine, the Incisive title covering the UK health and life insurance sectors. For the first three months the programme was structured to give graduates both in-house training on how to write news and features as well as external training that included learning teeline shorthand to improve the speed and accuracy of our reporting. After the scheme ended, the graduate programme director, David Worsfold, was always on hand to support us should any of us need further guidance.
After 18 months on Cover, I moved into the risk division to accept a reporter role at OpRisk & Compliance Magazine, transferring over to the New York office a few weeks shy of my two year anniversary at the company. Another four years on, I’m still in New York and now a senior staff writer for Risk, one of our major brands, covering Wall Street and the wider international derivatives markets”.
Ramya Jaidev joined as an editorial trainee in 2009 on Central Banking Publications: “My favourite thing about the graduate training programme is that the courses run alongside working days. I find it much easier to remember things when I get to apply a lot of it immediately – it's like evolving as a journalist, rather than learning per se. The support at Incisive is fantastic. I broke my ankle nearly a month ago, and everyone from my editors to folks in HR and IT has been so helpful and understanding, often going out of their way to make sure I have everything I need and can do the job.”
To apply, you will need to submit a CV and 500 word piece on The key policy issues in the financial services sector facing the new government. The application deadline is Monday 31st May 2010. Candidates should be available to start the training programme in London on the 6th September 2010.
An assessment centre will take place in mid July and you will be contacted with the details if you have been selected to attend. All applicants will receive a response, however, we regret to inform you that due to the volumes of candidates we are unable to provide individual feedback at application stage.
