- 26 Feb 2008

ALM announced that four of its publications, Corporate Counsel, IP Law & Business, Legal Times and The American Lawyer, have received 12 finalist nominations in nine print and online categories of the 2007 Jesse H. Neal National Business Journalism Award competition.  Approximately 100 finalists were selected from thousands of entries.  Established in 1955, the Neal Awards recognize and reward editorial excellence in business-to-business publications and are considered the industry’s most prestigious editorial honors.

Corporate Counsel
received two finalist nominations in the “Best Single Article” category for “Saw No Evil,” a January 2007 story analyzing the actions of Hewlett-Packard’s former general counsel Ann Baskins, who resigned following the HP spying scandal, and for “Someone to Watch Over You,” the magazine’s October examination of the Justice Department’s use of nonprosecution agreements and outside monitors to enact corporate reforms.  The magazine was also selected as a finalist in the “Best Subject-Related Series of Articles” for its “2007 GC Compensation Survey,” an exhaustive analysis of the payouts of the nation’s Fortune 500 top lawyers, based on data culled from corporate financial statements.

IP Law & Business also received two finalist nominations in the “Best Single Article” category for “Not Invented Here,” describing how a new philosophy toward using and sharing technology has helped consumer products giant Procter & Gamble successfully license its technology and use the technology of others to launch new P&G products, and for “Get Used to It” an October article examining pharmaceutical company Novartis’ recent failed challenge to India’s drug patent laws and the important parallels between the travails of Novartis and new threats facing the drug industry in the U.S.

Legal Times was named a finalist for “Best Single Issue of a Newspaper/News Tabloid” in its revenue category for its November 12, 2007 edition, which featured an exclusive interview with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on her early days as a pioneering woman in the law.  In addition, legaltimes.com, which includes the popular The Blog of Legal Times (legaltimes.com/blt) and the new Influence blog (legaltimes.com/influenceblog), which covers the business of lobbying, was selected as a finalist in the “Best Web Site” category competition.
