Readership overview
ABC circulation July 2007 – June 2008 18,724
Actuaries provide commercial, financial and prudential advice on the management of assets and liabilities – especially where long-term management and planning are critical factors.
Life assurance, pensions and general insurance are the three areas where most actuaries work – either as employees or as consultants – and the areas in which there are roles reserved to actuaries by statute or regulation.
The relationship between assets and liabilities – the need for capital and whether it is being invested appropriately to the liabilities taken on – is an integral part of an actuary's work. Actuaries also work as investment managers, analysts and advisers.
An approximate split of the UK practising members across the various areas of work is shown below.
- Pensions 40%
- Life Assurance 33%
- General Insurance 10%
- Investment 6%
- Other 6%
- Undisclosed 5%
Actuaries represent a high net worth audience, with newly qualified actuaries commanding salaries around the £55k mark, rising sharply to up to £150k within five years of qualification.
Editorial philosophy
The Actuary’s objective is to be the leading authority on the actuarial profession through a combination of editorial expertise and breadth of coverage.
The magazine is designed to inform, educate and entertain actuaries, retaining an independent voice for a readership that represents a diverse range of ages, location and areas of work.
To ensure the integrity and independence of the title, The Actuary’s content is overseen by an advisory panel consisting of senior actuaries specially appointed by the Profession. Each issue carries a main editorial theme which informs the feature content, ensuring all areas of the market are covered during the year.
The comprehensive news coverage keeps actuaries up-to-date with the latest developments in the profession, including sector reports, educational and research topics as well as a vibrant social element.
Opinion columns, contributed articles, Q&As and roundtable debates are intended to stimulate discussion of the key issues affecting UK actuaries and ensure a broad cross-section of views is represented. The thriving letters page is testament to its effectiveness.
The Actuary plays a vital role in supporting and promoting awareness of the actuary’s professional role both in the UK and abroad, encouraging best practice and successful career development.
