The British Journal of Photography has been named among the top ten magazine and newspaper apps by US consulting and research firm McPheters & Company’s iMonitor service.
Four other UK titles – Mail Online, Wired, Metro and car magazine Evo – also feature in the top ten and group publishing director Marc Hartog hailed BJP's inclusion in this list as a huge achievement.
“We set out to create a brand new version of the BJP, bringing the authority and production values that the print magazine enjoys to the iPad, and retelling the story in an interactive and immersive way that simply cannot be done on paper. The BJP app has been very well received by readers, peers and the industry alike. As well as just being named by iMonitor as one of their Top 10 European apps of 2011, it has been recognised by Apple as ‘new & noteworthy’ and on its launch topped the app store charts.
"With almost three times our print readership already and growing fast, the iPad and newsstand present us with an opportunity to deliver our content to a global audience in an environment which we believe readers will see real value in”, said Mr Hartog.
iMonitor provides evaluation and global tracking of around 3700 apps related to magazines and newspapers, or which fall into the “other news” category. The ratings are based on a combination of app design, functionality and use of rich-media features that enhance user experience and expand upon the services offered by traditional print publications. The full top ten list can be found here.
Less than 24 hours after its launch, BJP’s Winter edition of the iPad app reached the top spot as the highest-grossing app in the Photo & Video category in iTunes. It also entered the charts at number 4 in Newsstand. Since September, British Journal of Photography’s app has generated more than 20,000 downloads.
BJP’s Autumn edition and a 50-page preview of the Winter edition are available free from the App Store; BJP’s Winter edition (350+ pages) is on sale for £6.99/€7.99/$9.99, or via a six-month subscription at the launch offer price of £9.99/€10.99/$13.99.
The app was launched in September to immediate acclaim.
Mr Hartog (right) also said that Incisive Media was particularly proud that it built the app from scratch on the Mag+ platform using exisiting in-house expertise: "The app team here has done a fantastic job and the expertise they now have is going to quickly benefit many more Incisive Media titles".
