Faye Kilburn - European Reporter for Inside Market Data

Faye Kilburn

What were you doing before you became an Incisive Editorial Trainee?
Before starting at Incisive I was at university. I studied Physics and Philosophy at Bristol- so nothing to do with finance or journalism.

What were your experiences on the assessment day?
Honestly, the assessment day was exhausting and I felt really out of my depth with all the finance! But the people were so nice and it was great getting to know the other grads. My advice would be to read the FT, read the economist, and know what is happening in the world but don't pretend you know about something when you don't because they'll see through it.

What role are you doing now?
I have recently been promoted to European Reporter for Inside Market Data - Waters Technology's news weekly. I loved working across all our brands but I was ready to specialise, and the pace of a weekly is much more exciting. Incisive is a great place to find your niche and there are loads of ways to progress.

What was the first story that you had published?
I honestly can't remember! Something press-released. I remember feeling really proud seeing my name in print for the first time but you write so many stories so it does lose its novelty. Now I get excited when I see my name against a really great story or an exclusive. You write a lot but its quality over quantity I'd say.

It's been your best moment at Incisive so far?
That's a tough call. It would probably be about two/three months into the job when I really started to find my feet. It was a whole new world for me - finance and journalism - so when I felt like I knew what I was doing and everything slotted into place. There was also a time when I introduced myself to someone at an event and they said "Oh, you're Faye Kilburn, I read your article last week." It's great to know that people are reading your pieces - that's what we write for after all!
